Manchester United are weighing up a move for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, with Italian outlet Corriere di Bologna — via Sport Witness — reporting that the Colombian's departure from the Serie A club is now "inevitable."

Another cut-price deal in the works

The Red Devils have pursued a cost-conscious approach in the current transfer window, bringing in Youri Tielemans for £35 million and Andrey Santos for £48 million — a combined spend of just £83 million since their return to the top tier of European football. A deal for Lucumi, valued at £21.7 million by Bologna, would fit that pattern.

Manager Michael Carrick is seeking to deepen his squad as Manchester United prepare to compete across four competitions, including the UEFA Champions League. Lucumi, 28, is available at a reasonable price largely because his contract expires next summer, giving Bologna little choice but to sell before losing him for nothing.

United's edge over the competition

Chelsea are also monitoring Lucumi, as are Bournemouth, Sunderland, and Nottingham Forest. However, United hold a key advantage — the ability to offer UEFA Champions League football, which Chelsea cannot. Juventus reportedly have an agreement with the player, but have so far failed to meet Bologna's asking price, whereas United would be willing to pay it in full.

Bournemouth's recent capture of Antonio Silva and Nottingham Forest's ongoing pursuit of Ousmane Diomande could clear the path further for United. The report suggests United's rivals are occupied elsewhere, leaving the Old Trafford club well-positioned to move swiftly.

Broader recruitment picture

Lucumi is not the only name on United's radar. Giorgio Scalvini has also been linked, with the versatile Serie A centre-back capable of operating in midfield — a trait that is said to interest Carrick. Jonathan Rowe, another Bologna player, has additionally been credited to United as the club explores options to strengthen their attack.

Moves for Lewis Hall and Ismaila Sarr have been explored, but owners INEOS remain committed to a tighter wage structure as they reshape the club's financial model. United open their season against Hull City.
