Bassey Arrives in Warsaw as Super Eagles Build Squad Depth Ahead of Poland Friendly

3 days ago·1 min

Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey has joined the Super Eagles' training camp in Warsaw, swelling the squad to 20 players as Nigeria prepare for Wednesday's friendly against Poland.

Bassey's arrival at the Presidential Hotel — the team's base in the Polish capital — gives head coach Éric Chelle a competitive pool of central defenders to select from, with Semi Ajayi, Emmanuel Ogbu, and Emmanuel Fernandez already present.

Goalkeepers in fine form

Maduka Okoye touched down in Warsaw on Monday afternoon and went straight into training, impressing the coaching staff with his sharpness. He is joined by Arthur Okonkwo, who kept back-to-back clean sheets as Nigeria lifted the Unity Cup in London, and Cyprus-based Francis Uzoho, giving Chelle three capable options between the posts.

Midfield and attack well stocked

Captain Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tochukwu Nnadi, Raphael Onyedika, and youngster Abdullahi Bewene are all available to contest spots in the middle of the park.

At left back, Zaidu Sanusi and Bruno Onyemaechi will battle for the starting berth. In attack, Chelle can call upon Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Rafiu Durosinmi, Terem Moffi, and Paul Onuachu, with Germany-based Philip Otele — who caught the eye at the Unity Cup — expected to complete his travel to camp.

Match details and what comes next

Wednesday's fixture kicks off at 8:45 pm local time (7:45 pm Nigeria time) at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, a venue that holds 58,000 supporters.

The Super Eagles will then travel to Portugal for a second friendly the following Wednesday, facing the hosts at the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa Stadium in Leiria.
