Benitez: Iraola Holds Key Advantage Over Alonso in the Premier League

Rafael Benitez, the former Real Madrid manager, believes Andoni Iraola enters his new role at Liverpool with a meaningful edge over Chelsea counterpart Xabi Alonso — and that edge is hard-won Premier League familiarity.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Benitez acknowledged that both newly appointed managers carry enormous potential, but he singled out Iraola's three-year tenure at Bournemouth as a significant head start for his compatriot as he takes charge of one of England's biggest clubs.
League knowledge is the difference
"Iraola has done really well at Bournemouth. I followed him during his time at Rayo Vallecano and was impressed. Now he has a different challenge at Liverpool," Benitez told Sky Sports.
"Liverpool is a massive club. But I think he has an advantage as he knows the league. It's not easy to arrive new to the Premier League from other countries."
Benitez drew a clear contrast with Alonso, who arrives at Chelsea following his celebrated spell at Bayer Leverkusen — a period that ended in a historic Bundesliga title — but who has never previously managed in English football.
Alonso's quality not in doubt
"Xabi is a very clever coach. He did very well with Leverkusen; that was fantastic. We know from experience that it's quite complicated to manage Real Madrid. He has knowledge of the Premier League as a player, but this is his first time managing here," Benitez added.
"That will be a challenge, but he has the skills to do well."
Benitez himself managed Liverpool between 2004 and 2010, winning the UEFA Champions League in his first season, and later took charge of Real Madrid — giving him a unique perspective on the pressures both managers now face.
Both Iraola and Alonso are widely regarded as among the most promising managerial talents in European football, and their simultaneous arrivals in the Premier League are set to make the coming season one of the most intriguing in recent memory.
