Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivered a masterclass at Elland Road on Monday night, tormenting a hapless Newcastle United defence as Leeds United claimed a commanding 4-1 victory to move up to third in the Premier League.

Calvert-Lewin's love affair with Newcastle continues

The striker has now scored eight goals against Newcastle — more than against any other opponent — and his latest display underlined why he is among the division's most dangerous centre-forwards. A trademark header deflected off Jayden Bogle for Leeds' second, before Calvert-Lewin turned provider, finishing calmly on the ground for the hosts' third. His rating of 9 on the night was thoroughly deserved.

Noah Okafor was equally impressive, pulling the ball back for Ao Tanaka to open the scoring and then arrowing a fine strike home for Leeds' fourth. Bogle — who found the net at Brighton last time out — was credited with the second goal after his effort took a decisive final touch, and he was a constant menace down the right flank, forcing Lukas Hornicek into two big saves before that.

Newcastle's defensive woes

For Newcastle, the evening was one to forget. Malick Thiaw, who wore the captain's armband, endured a torrid night — beaten easily by Calvert-Lewin for the second goal, slapping the turf in frustration as the striker fired past him for the third, and then failing to cut out Okafor's fourth. Sven Botman was equally exposed, unable to live with Calvert-Lewin's movement throughout the contest.

Amar Dedic struggled on his return from a hamstring problem, with Leeds repeatedly targeting his side of the pitch. Lewis Hall, fresh from signing a new contract, was dragged out of position during the build-up to the second goal. Nico Gonzalez lasted only 19 minutes after taking a blow to the head, leaving 18-year-old Sean Steur to be thrown into an already difficult situation.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo, making his full debut following a £51.4 million move from Lille, had little to feed off as Newcastle resorted to long balls that found no target.

Bright moments for the visitors

It was not all despair for Newcastle. Hornicek kept the scoreline from becoming more embarrassing, twice denying Bogle and also thwarting Calvert-Lewin. Bazoumana Toure, introduced from the bench, showed his electric pace to pull one back and stake a claim for a starting berth. Tino Livramento continued his return from injury and set up Toure's consolation.

Yoane Wissa created Newcastle's clearest opening and worked tirelessly, while Harvey Barnes — who carries a fierce record against Leeds — had his eyes lit up inside the box before James Trafford produced a vital stop to deny him.

Leeds' relentless display

Leeds were relentless from the first whistle. Anton Stach won a corner inside 32 seconds to set the tone, and Gabriel Gudmundsson caused Newcastle persistent problems with his marauding runs down the left, looking every inch a winger rather than a wing-back. Ethan Ampadu marshalled the midfield with authority, while Tanaka, despite some nervy moments in possession, showed composure to pull the trigger for the opener — a shot that took two deflections on its way in.

The result lifts Leeds to third place in the Premier League, and with Calvert-Lewin finding the net with such regularity, the ambitions at Elland Road are growing with every passing week.
