Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has moved to ease concerns over Mason Mount's fitness, insisting the midfielder's early exit from a preseason friendly against Paris Saint-Germain was purely precautionary.

Mount was withdrawn after just 18 minutes of the 1-1 draw in Sweden, having appeared to take a knock to the foot. Following a brief conversation with coaching staff on the touchline, he was replaced by Tyler Fletcher.

"I've played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history," Carrick told the club's official website, suggesting the pair share a strong bond as player and manager work together.

Carrick also revealed plans for the squad's upcoming preparations, confirming the full group — including Marcus, Kobbie, and Lisandro — would travel to Dublin for a mid-week fixture against Leeds on Wednesday.

The news will bring some relief to United supporters, given that Mount's time at Old Trafford since his 2023 move from Chelsea has been blighted by repeated injury setbacks. In three seasons with the club, the 27-year-old made his most top-flight appearances last term — 23 in total — yet averaged a mere 44 minutes per outing, underlining how fragile his fitness record has been.

United head into the new campaign in confident mood after securing a third-place finish last season, which earned them a place in the UEFA Champions League. Their opening Premier League assignment comes away at newly-promoted Hull, before they host Ipswich, travel to Everton, and then welcome rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford for the Manchester derby on September 13.
