Chelsea are edging closer to securing left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, with all parties growing confident that a deal can be finalised below the £20m mark.

Personal terms between the club and the 28-year-old have already been agreed, and Chelsea's pursuit has been ongoing since an initial £15m offer was turned down by the La Liga side at the end of June — nearly a month ago.

Protracted negotiations

Talks grew complicated as Chelsea felt Rayo Vallecano were inflating their asking price during discussions, at one point demanding the full release clause of £42.8m. Despite the friction, Chavarria made his intentions clear to his current club, expressing a firm desire to move to Stamford Bridge.

Rayo Vallecano, who suffered defeat to Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in May, ultimately could not stand in the player's way as his preference for Chelsea became well known.

Xabi Alonso's tactical blueprint

Chavarria is a priority target for new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who became familiar with the defender while coaching Real Madrid last season. Alonso is keen to implement the wing-back system he used to lead Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024, and Chavarria's arrival would help him do exactly that.

Pairing the left-back with new signing Marco Palestra — who joined Chelsea for £47m from Atalanta in July — would give Alonso the wide options his preferred system demands. The deal would also fill a gap left by Marc Cucurella, who departed to Real Madrid in June for £51.8m.

A busy summer at Stamford Bridge

Chavarria would become the latest addition to a Chelsea squad that has undergone significant change this summer. The club have already brought in striker Danny Welbeck, 35, from Brighton and midfielder Jordan Henderson, 36, following his contract cancellation with Brentford — both experienced hands to complement a young group.

Chelsea have also made headline moves: club-record £117m forward Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa, while defender Maxence Lacroix joined from Crystal Palace for £52m. Midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to complete a switch from partner club Strasbourg imminently.

On the other side of the ledger, Chelsea have agreed to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Italian side Como 1907 for approximately £31m, with the club set to concentrate on further player sales in the weeks ahead.
