Chelsea are pursuing Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson as part of a summer recruitment drive that also includes positive talks with Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.

Interest in Henderson

The 36-year-old has drawn attention from several top Premier League clubs since making an impressive return to English football via Ajax in 2025. Henderson signed with Brentford, who made clear from the outset that they would not block his path if a major club came calling.

He still has one year remaining on his contract at Brentford, and while the club could allow him to depart on a free transfer, that outcome is less certain if multiple clubs enter the race. Chelsea view Henderson as a player who brings the character, leadership, and experience they are targeting in this transfer window.

The Blues had previously pursued Granit Xhaka at Sunderland earlier this summer, but that deal ultimately fell through. Henderson is recovering from an arm injury picked up during the 2026 World Cup.

Positive talks with Welbeck

Chelsea have also held encouraging early discussions with Brighton over a move for Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old striker has maintained remarkable consistency in the Premier League, netting 13 goals last season after scoring 10 the campaign before.

Brighton are open to a sale provided they receive fair compensation, with Welbeck entering the final year of his contract. His potential arrival would fit a pattern Chelsea have established this summer of recruiting physically commanding players with proven Premier League pedigree.

The Blues have already splashed out £117 million to bring Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa — a record fee for a British player — and are closing in on Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. A deal for Welbeck would also raise further questions about the futures of strikers Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu.

Chelsea's Brighton connection

This would not be the first time Chelsea have raided Brighton for talent. In recent seasons, the Blues have secured deals for Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez from the south coast club. Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell are among several Brighton staff members who have also made the move to Stamford Bridge over the past four years.
