England Face Argentina in Biggest World Cup Test Since 1966

2 hours ago·1 min

England stand on the brink of history, facing Argentina in a World Cup semi-final that ranks as their most consequential match since Sir Alf Ramsey's side lifted the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley in 1966. A victory on Wednesday (20:00 BST) at the Atlanta Stadium would send the Three Lions to their first men's World Cup final in 60 years.

The match carries a weight beyond football. England have reached just two World Cup semi-finals in the six decades since that triumph — at Italia '90 and Russia 2018 — and both ended in elimination. Meanwhile, they have also fallen at the final hurdle in the last two European Championship finals, losing to Italy on penalties at Euro 2020 and going down 2-1 to Spain in Berlin at Euro 2024.

The burden of nearly men

England's tournament record in recent years is one of consistent near-misses. The 2018 semi-final exit to Croatia in Moscow remains a painful memory — Kieran Trippier's fifth-minute opener gave them hope, but conservatism crept in and they lost 2-1 after extra time. Three years later, Luke Shaw struck inside two minutes in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, only for England to freeze and eventually lose on penalties to Italy — the same Italy side who have failed to qualify for the past three World Cups.
