Phil Foden was sent off after 23 minutes in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, dismissed for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes in what proved to be the match's most contentious moment.

The Manchester City midfielder picked up the ball on the right flank in his own half before Fernandes closed him down and tripped him. Foden, still on the ground, then kicked out at the Portuguese midfielder's body — and referee pointed straight to his pocket.

Replays indicated that Fernandes had kicked Foden in the back before Foden retaliated, though the video assistant referee upheld the on-field decision. Fernandes escaped without even a booking for his involvement.

Foden, 26, became only the second Manchester City player to receive a red card in a Premier League Manchester derby, following Bernardo Corradi's dismissal in December 2006.
