Gavi Rejects £35m Manchester United Move to Stay at Barcelona

2 hours ago·1 min

Barcelona midfielder Gavi has turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United this summer, with the Spain World Cup winner opting to remain with the Catalan club, according to Mirror.

Manager Michael Carrick had identified the 22-year-old as a priority signing, with United prepared to meet Barcelona's £35m valuation. Despite that willingness to spend, Gavi made it clear he has no desire to leave Camp Nou.

A blow for United's transfer window

The decision is a significant setback for United supporters, who have grown increasingly frustrated by their club's quiet summer in the transfer market. While rivals have invested heavily in new recruits, United's business has been limited to a combined £85m on Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, as well as a free transfer for goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

The club have also said goodbye to several familiar faces, including Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro, while goalkeepers Radek Vitek and Altay Bayindir have both moved on. Carrick must now look elsewhere if he is to secure a third midfielder before the window closes.

Gavi's loyalty to Barcelona

Gavi has been at the club since the age of 11, and has made 119 league appearances since his debut in 2021. A serious knee injury disrupted his 2023–24 campaign, keeping him sidelined for five months, but he returned to form in March and forced his way into the Spain squad for the World Cup.

He featured twice during the tournament and was an unused substitute as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final in New York. Under contract at Camp Nou until 2030, and with manager Hansi Flick firmly opposed to selling him, there was little realistic prospect of a deal.
