Gordon Set to Be World Cup's Oldest Player as Gunn Claims No 1 Shirt

3 days ago·2 min

Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon will make history at this summer's FIFA World Cup 2026 as the oldest player in the entire tournament — yet, at 43, he has not been assigned the number one shirt.

Following the official confirmation of all 48 nations' squad lists, Gordon will wear the number 21 jersey. Fellow goalkeeper Angus Gunn has been handed the coveted number one, while Liam Kelly takes number 12.

Fletcher steps in as surprise addition

Manchester United teenager Tyler Fletcher has been given the number eight shirt after stepping in as an unexpected replacement for the injured Billy Gilmour, who was ruled out on Sunday.

In attack, Lyndon Dykes will carry Scotland's number nine, with Che Adams wearing number 10 and Lawrence Shankland taking number 20.

Centre-back Grant Hanley has been assigned number five, though head coach Steve Clarke has given little away about his preferred starting line-up through these squad number choices.

Road to the tournament opener

Scotland have already travelled to the United States and will face Bolivia in their final pre-tournament warm-up — broadcast live on the BBC — on Saturday at 21:00 BST.

Their World Cup campaign begins the following weekend, when they take on Haiti in Boston on Sunday, 14 June (02:00 BST). Scotland will subsequently face Morocco and Brazil in the group stage.
