Liverpool claimed their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season on Friday night, beating newly promoted Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road — and they needed fewer than ten minutes to settle the contest.

Swedish striker Alexander Isak struck twice in the opening exchanges, netting in the 6th and 9th minutes to give new head coach Andoni Iraola his maiden league win. Both goals were created by Cody Gakpo, who came through on the night as Liverpool's chief architect.

Gakpo pulls the strings

The opener arrived in the 6th minute when Milos Kerkez won the ball near the halfway line and fed Gakpo, who threaded a pass through to Isak. The former Newcastle United forward took one touch to set himself before firing past goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen at the near post.

Three minutes later, Liverpool doubled their lead. Gakpo delivered another incisive through ball, and Isak twisted past defender Jacob Greaves before slotting home left-footed inside the near post to make it 2-0.

The result ends a frustrating start to the season for the Reds, who had opened their campaign with back-to-back 2-2 draws. Under Iraola — who took charge this summer — Liverpool now have something to build on.

Barcola's arrival

High-profile summer signing Bradley Barcola, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain, entered the fray around the 64th minute as a substitute. The France international gave the Liverpool faithful a glimpse of his ability, showing bursts of pace and directness during his cameo appearance.
