Jeff Bezos Closes In on One-Third Stake in Liverpool as Billionaire Consortium Takes Shape

1 hour ago·2 min

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is on the verge of completing a deal to acquire approximately one-third of Liverpool, with an announcement from the club's controlling shareholder Fenway Sports Group expected as soon as this week, according to Sky News.

The consortium securing the stake is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Joining Bezos in the investor group is Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook.

A valuation of historic proportions

The transaction is expected to value Liverpool at £4.4bn ($6bn), making it one of the largest deals ever recorded in football. Bezos alone carries a personal fortune estimated by Forbes at over £207bn ($280bn), while Saverin's wealth is put at more than £23.7bn ($32bn).

If the deal goes through, three of the world's wealthiest individuals will become co-owners of one of English football's most storied clubs — a club that FSG purchased for just £300m back in 2010 when it was in serious financial difficulty.

Stake could exceed 30 percent

One insider told Sky News that the transaction has grown slightly in scope since initial discussions, with the stake now potentially exceeding 30 percent. A source also cautioned that, while an announcement is expected within days, it could slip into next week.

Saverin, 44, is no stranger to English football boardrooms. He was part of a consortium that submitted an unsuccessful bid to acquire Chelsea FC during the 2022 ownership auction that followed Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

FSG's remarkable return on investment

The deal underlines the extraordinary financial journey FSG has made at Anfield. Having taken control of Liverpool for £300m 16 years ago, a valuation of £4.4bn would represent an appreciation of more than 14 times the original purchase price.

The last time a Liverpool stake changed hands was in 2023, when Dynasty Equity acquired a small interest that valued the club at more than £3.3bn ($4.5bn).

FSG issued a statement last month confirming that a consortium led, managed, and represented by Bhatia had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club. The club, FSG, and the Bhatia-led consortium all declined to comment further when approached by Sky Sports News.

Bezos has no prior history of involvement in football, but his prospective entry into the ownership of Liverpool signals how emphatically the sport has been embraced by ultra-high-net-worth investors as a standalone asset class.
