Manchester United legend Lee Sharpe has revealed a surprising choice when asked which current Red Devil he would have loved to share a pitch with — picking striker Joshua Zirkzee over more obvious options.

Speaking to FourFourTwo in partnership with esports betting platform Thunderpick, Sharpe was unequivocal in his admiration for the Dutch forward. "Joshua Zirkzee is one of my favourite players to watch," the former United winger said. "His ability on the ball is phenomenal: in tight areas, he's got great feet and the ability to go past people."

Sharpe also took aim at Zirkzee's recent lack of minutes, adding: "I'm surprised they didn't play him a bit more or give him a chance at the weekend against Hull. It was tight and they needed goals, after all."

Mainoo also earns praise

When pressed on whether he might have preferred playing alongside club captain Bruno Fernandes, Sharpe shifted course only slightly. "Well, I really like Kobbie Mainoo, too," he said. "Mainoo is a top player as well."

Zirkzee's difficult spell at Old Trafford

Zirkzee arrived at Old Trafford two summers ago during Erik ten Hag's reign, making an instant impression with a goal on the opening day of the 2024/25 season against Fulham. However, his time at the club has not unfolded as hoped.

The arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko severely restricted his opportunities, leaving him with just 26 appearances across all competitions last season and a modest return of two goals — both scored under former manager Ruben Amorim rather than current boss Michael Carrick.

With Marcus Rashford set to return from loan and competition from the likes of Mason Mount and Patrick Dorgu, Zirkzee's future at the club remains uncertain. Reports have linked him with a summer departure, with Transfermarkt valuing the 23-year-old at €20 million.
