Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2032, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old had been contracted until 2028, but the new deal ensures he will oversee Spain's defence of their World Cup title on home soil in 2030. Spain are set to co-host that tournament alongside Portugal and Morocco, with additional matches to be played in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as part of the competition's centenary celebrations.

A record of sustained excellence

De la Fuente took the helm in December 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique following Spain's early exit in the last 16 at that year's World Cup. The transformation under his leadership has been remarkable — Spain have lost just twice in 41 competitive matches and collected three major trophies in that spell.

Those honours include the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, a 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final, and a 1-0 win against Argentina in extra time to claim the World Cup this past July — Spain's second men's World Cup crown overall. They finished runners-up to Portugal in the 2024-25 Nations League edition.

Federation president backs long-term commitment

RFEF president Rafael Louzan made the announcement at Wednesday's World Football Summit in Madrid, revealing that improving De la Fuente's financial terms was central to securing the extension.
