Manchester United Recruitment Chief Christopher Vivell Closing In on Bayern Munich Move

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United are facing the prospect of losing director of recruitment Christopher Vivell to Bayern Munich, according to reports from Germany cited by Sport Witness. The potential departure arrives at a moment of acute instability at Old Trafford, compounding an already difficult situation for the club.

Vivell joined the Red Devils ahead of the 2024/25 season in an interim capacity, but his standing within the INEOS-led structure rose quickly. By February 2025, the club had appointed him on a permanent basis, handing him oversight of global talent identification and squad construction.

A club in crisis

Manchester United's on-pitch struggles have been severe. They have collected just one victory from their first nine Premier League matches this season, leaving them marooned near the foot of the table. Results in cup competitions have offered no respite — Brighton and Hove Albion eliminated them from the Carabao Cup, and Atletico Madrid inflicted a damaging defeat in the UEFA Champions League.

At the helm, manager Michael Carrick is operating under considerable pressure, with widespread expectation that his tenure could be brought to an end in the near future. Reports suggest that Vivell and director of football Jason Wilcox are not aligned on who should replace Carrick, with candidates including Julian Nagelsmann, Fabian Hurzeler, and Antonio Conte understood to have been shortlisted.

A natural fit at Bayern Munich

Vivell's appeal to Bayern Munich is not difficult to understand. He shares an established working relationship with Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund, making him a logical appointment for the Bundesliga giants. Should he accept the move, Manchester United would be left without a recruitment chief at the precise moment a managerial change appears increasingly probable.

The timing could hardly be worse. With the January transfer window approaching and a fractured leadership structure drawing public criticism — including indirect commentary from defender Lisandro Martinez — the potential exit of Vivell threatens to deepen the instability at Old Trafford still further.
