Meslier Signs for Arsenal on Free Transfer After Leeds Departure

Arsenal have completed the signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer, bringing the French stopper in on a two-year deal that includes an option for a third year.
Meslier, 26, arrives from Leeds after seven seasons at the Yorkshire club, during which he made 215 appearances and kept 70 clean sheets. He lost his starting spot at Elland Road and ran down his contract, making him available at no cost this summer.
Speaking on his move, Meslier said: "I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again."
Where Meslier fits in the pecking order
Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper David Raya had a stellar 2025-26 campaign, claiming the Premier League Golden Glove with 19 clean sheets in 37 appearances as the Gunners lifted the title. Meslier is set to serve as the third-choice option behind Raya and current second-choice Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, uncertainty surrounds Arrizabalaga's future heading into next season. Should the Spaniard depart, Meslier would step up into the number two role — a prospect that may well have attracted him to the move in the first place.
BBC Sport first reported Arsenal's interest in Meslier on 30 June, with the transfer now formally confirmed. His arrival is expected to prompt teenager Tommy Setford to head out on loan this summer.
