Newcastle United Close In on £50m Johan Manzambi Deal

Newcastle United are on the verge of signing SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, with both clubs having agreed a fee of around £50 million in principle, according to Sky Germany.

The 20-year-old caught the eye at this summer's World Cup, contributing three goals and two assists for Switzerland across the tournament. His performances reinforced Newcastle's long-held interest — the club had identified him as a primary target even before the competition began.

Manzambi has also demonstrated his quality at club level, registering seven goals and five assists in 38 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg. A long-term contract is understood to be ready and waiting for the midfielder, who also attracted attention from Aston Villa during the transfer window.

A welcome boost amid midfield turbulence

The deal would provide significant relief to Newcastle supporters enduring a turbulent summer in the engine room. Sandro Tonali has already moved on, joining Spurs in a £100 million deal, while captain Bruno Guimaraes has made clear his wish to join Arsenal — a situation the club are working hard to contain, insisting he is not available this window.

Manzambi's expected arrival follows the confirmed signing of Dutch midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax, announced earlier in the day. Together, the two additions signal Newcastle's intent to overhaul their midfield options despite the disruption caused by high-profile exits.

The Magpies have also monitored other options in the middle of the park, with Monaco's Lamine Camara among those considered. On the outgoing side, Newcastle are open to departures, with Joe Willock among the players available for the right offer.
