Onuachu Backs Super Eagles Quality Ahead of Poland and Portugal Friendlies

2 days ago·2 min

Paul Onuachu has declared that the Super Eagles carry enough quality to compete with any nation on the planet, as Nigeria prepare for back-to-back international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

The Super Eagles face Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday before travelling to take on Portugal — the 2016 European champions — on June 10. Onuachu is among the 21 players currently assembled in camp ahead of the two fixtures.

"It's always nice to come around the team and meet the boys again and of course we are ready, we are prepared. We have the quality to play against any team in the world and hopefully we are going to show it against Poland and Portugal," Onuachu told the Super Eagles media team.

The striker did not shy away from expressing his frustration at Nigeria's absence from the World Cup, acknowledging the painful irony of a squad filled with world-class talent that will not be on the global stage.

"Sadly we are not going to the World Cup because we have world class players but unfortunately we are not going to the World Cup but it's football," he said.

A standout season at Trabzonspor

Onuachu arrives in camp on the back of a remarkable campaign with Trabzonspor. The former Southampton striker finished as joint-top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig, netting 22 goals in 30 appearances. He also delivered in the cup final, scoring both goals as Trabzonspor beat Konyaspor 2-1 to lift the Turkish Cup.

Reflecting on what the season meant for the club and its supporters, Onuachu said the triumph was about more than personal statistics.

"We had an amazing season compared to the players we had, the budget of the players we have compared to other teams, I think we really put in a good shift this season. We really worked hard, we were close to compete with the other top teams but they are much stronger — but winning the Cup was a great feeling for the players and especially for the city," he said.

Onuachu also revealed that his move to Trabzonspor was driven by a personal promise. He had previously been on loan at the club and left feeling there was unfinished business. Before signing permanently, he recorded a video message for the fans pledging to return stronger — a promise he believes he delivered on.

"I knew I was going to score some goals even before I made the transfer. I made a video for the Trabzonspor fans and told them I will be back stronger and better, that we have an unfinished business. The last time I was on loan there I promised to finish it, and I fulfilled what I said to them before I signed — so it was good," Onuachu added.
