Poland Snatch Stoppage-Time Equaliser to Deny Super Eagles Victory

2 days ago·2 min

Nigeria's Super Eagles were denied back-to-back victories over Poland after Przemyslaw Wisniewski struck a stunning long-range volley deep into stoppage time to earn the hosts a 2-2 draw in Wednesday's international friendly in Warsaw.

The Super Eagles had looked set to leave Poland with a second consecutive win, with Terem Moffi and substitute Paul Onuachu — from the penalty spot — putting Nigeria in front twice during the contest.

How the goals fell

Nigeria took the lead in the 23rd minute when Moffi slotted home from close range after collecting a low cross from Moses Simon. The goal was confirmed following a VAR review.

Poland levelled at the start of the second half through Kaylee Potulski, who finished from close range after the Super Eagles failed to clear a corner.

Head coach Eric Chelle rang the changes before the restart, introducing Calvin Bassey, Philip Otele, Raphael Onyedika, Rafiu Durosinmi, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, and Onuachu — seven alterations in total.

Onuachu restored Nigeria's advantage in the 77th minute, converting from the penalty spot after a Polish player handled the ball inside the box. The Super Eagles appeared to be holding on for the win.

Late heartbreak for Nigeria

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye had been outstanding throughout, producing a fine close-range save to deny Robert Lewandowski in the 82nd minute and stopping a low drive in the first minute of added time.

However, in the 95th minute, Wisniewski unleashed a superb long-range effort that flew past Okoye and into the net — snatching a point for Poland with virtually the last kick of the match.

Okoye had started between the sticks in a lineup that included debutant Abdullahi Bewene, Igoh, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Bruno Onyemaechi in defence, with Wilfred Ndidi, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Frank Onyeka in midfield. Akor Adams, Moffi, and Simon formed the attacking trio.

Lewandowski had tested Okoye on multiple occasions — notably in the 14th minute from a set piece and again on 71 minutes after capitalising on a poor back pass from Sanusi — but the Nigerian keeper stood firm each time.

Eyes turn to Portugal

Nigeria's attention now shifts to their second friendly of the international window, when the Super Eagles face 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound Portugal on Wednesday, June 10.
