Shakhtar Donetsk to Play Champions League Home Games at Stamford Bridge
Shakhtar Donetsk have confirmed an agreement with Chelsea to stage their UEFA Champions League home fixtures at Stamford Bridge, the west London ground that for nearly 20 years was controlled by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
The Ukrainian club, long displaced from their homeland by the ongoing war with Russia, announced the arrangement on Friday. Stamford Bridge will serve as Shakhtar Donetsk's European base as they navigate the continent's premier club competition.
The move carries an unmistakable historical irony — a Ukrainian side fleeing the consequences of Russian aggression will now play at a stadium once synonymous with Abramovich's ownership. The oligarch held the club from 2003 until 2022, when he was sanctioned following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
