Danny Welbeck headed home on his Chelsea debut as Xabi Alonso claimed his first competitive home victory as Blues manager, a comfortable 2-0 Carabao Cup second-round win over League One Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

Alonso named a strong starting lineup that included Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Reece James, signalling the club's intent to take the cup tie seriously. Chelsea dominated the opening 45 minutes but struggled to convert, with Palmer twice denied by goalkeeper Josh Keeley and Rogers striking the crossbar with the final effort of the half.

Welbeck breaks the deadlock

The breakthrough arrived five minutes into the second half. Malo Gusto delivered from wide, and Welbeck met the cross with a powerful header to open his Chelsea account — in what is his 19th season competing in England's top flight. That he and Luton head coach Jack Wilshere were once Arsenal team-mates adds a notable footnote to the occasion.

Luton, who had gone 15 matches unbeaten across all competitions before Thursday — the longest such run outside England's top four leagues — offered little in response, with Mike Penders making a routine save to deny Odoffin's headed free-kick in the first half their clearest opening.

Estevao seals it

The contest was settled in the 79th minute when Estevao burst into the area, executed a sharp stepover, and curled the ball into the opposite corner. The effort was ultimately ruled an own goal by Hakeem Odoffin, but the vision and execution belonged entirely to the young Brazilian.

Late on, substitute Joao Pedro missed a straightforward chance before fellow replacement Jamie Gittens struck the foot of the post, as Chelsea pushed to add to their tally in the closing minutes.

The result sends Chelsea into the Carabao Cup third round, where they will face Leeds United in early September. For Wilshere's Luton, it marks a first defeat in 16 matches across all competitions.
