Florian Wirtz is not a transfer target Bayern Munich are actively chasing, but the Bundesliga champions would be first in line to speak with the German midfielder should he ever become available, according to a report from Christian Falk and CF Bayern.
The news comes amid a difficult debut season at Liverpool for Wirtz, who has managed only nine Premier League contributions across 38 appearances — a modest return for a player who cost the club £116.5 million. Despite those underwhelming numbers, Liverpool have no intention of selling him.
Bayern's stance on Wirtz
Reporter Christian Falk was clear that Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is satisfied with his current squad and that no official approach for Wirtz is being planned. Kompany is experimenting with Michael Olise as the central creative force — a role Olise also performs for the France national team — and Jamal Musiala is tied to the club on a long-term contract, giving Bayern considerable depth in that area.
Falk explained the club's position directly: "Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he'd talk to. However, there is nothing planned. Bayern have a big squad and everyone's feeling really confident."
Falk also pointed to Liverpool's enormous financial outlay as a significant barrier to any deal. "Don't forget, either, that it was a lot of money Liverpool paid for Wirtz," he noted, underlining why the Reds would be deeply reluctant to sanction a sale so early in Wirtz's Merseyside career — and why doing so would almost certainly mean absorbing a substantial financial loss.
Wirtz still finding his feet in England
Bayern Munich had been strongly linked with Wirtz before Liverpool secured his signature last summer, beating their Bundesliga rivals to the deal. While the German was spectacular for Bayer Leverkusen, the transition to Premier League football has proved difficult — operating behind a forward line that included Mohamed Salah last term and currently features Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
Questions over his adaptation to English football are not new. His struggles in the early months of the season were well documented, and progress since then has been limited. Even so, all available indications suggest Wirtz will remain at Liverpool for the foreseeable future. Should that ever change, Bayern Munich have made clear they would be the first club he calls.
