Chelsea are pursuing deals for Maxence Lacroix, Danny Welbeck, and Jordan Henderson — a trio whose combined experience marks a meaningful departure from the youth-heavy recruitment model the club has followed since 2022.

From experience to youth — and back again?

When the BlueCo consortium completed their takeover in 2022, manager Thomas Tuchel moved fast. His first marquee signing was Raheem Sterling — then 27 — from Manchester City for up to £50m including add-ons. The England winger carried genuine pedigree, having collected four Premier League titles at City and helped England reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

The move did not deliver. Sterling struggled for form and fitness as Chelsea finished 12th in 2022-23, reportedly earning over £300,000 a week. He eventually departed on a free transfer in January 2026.

Kalidou Koulibaly arrived from Napoli for £33m, rated among Europe's finest centre-backs at the time. The Senegalese defender was 31 and gone within a single season, leaving for Al-Hilal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, signed from Barcelona for £10.3m on deadline day — at 33 — fared little better under Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, and he too left for nothing.

The youth pivot

Stung by those returns, Chelsea overhauled their approach and began targeting younger talent. The results were mixed, but the highlights were substantial.

In January 2023, just two weeks after his 22nd birthday, Enzo Fernandez arrived from Benfica for £107m — a then-British record. Across the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, the Argentina midfielder registered 24 assists across all competitions, including the Club World Cup, placing him behind only Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah among Premier League players in that category.

Seven months later, Moises Caicedo followed from Brighton for £100m, potentially rising to £115m. The Ecuador midfielder had a slow start but grew into one of the Premier League's most effective defensive midfielders, finishing last season joint-top for interceptions in the division with 59 — level with Everton's James Garner.

Cole Palmer arrived from Manchester City for an initial £40m in September 2023, also aged 21. He became Chelsea's top scorer in his debut season and has since netted 47 Premier League goals — surpassed only by Erling Haaland (76), Mohamed Salah (54), and Ollie Watkins (51) in that same period.

Yet for every success, a costly failure followed. Mykhailo Mudryk cost up to £89m from Shakhtar Donetsk at 22 and has been sidelined for over 18 months following an adverse finding in a routine doping test in December 2024. The Football Association subsequently handed the Ukraine winger a four-year ban; he has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Joao Felix, signed permanently for around £45m, scored once in 12 Premier League appearances before being sold to Al-Nassr. Wesley Fofana, bought from Leicester for around £70m aged 21, has spent much of his time in west London on the treatment table.

A pattern of inconsistency

Across four seasons since the takeover, Chelsea's Premier League finishes have read 12th, sixth, fourth, and 10th. The club have won two trophies — the Conference League and the Club World Cup — but owners with ambitious targets will feel the project has yet to fulfil its potential.

Alonso's blend of youth and experience

New manager Xabi Alonso has a track record of blending age groups. At Bayer Leverkusen, he signed four players over 27 for the 2023-24 season alone — among them Granit Xhaka and Alejandro Grimaldo, who proved central to the club's Bundesliga title triumph.

Owner Behdad Eghbali has publicly stated that Chelsea will add experience to what he regards as a strong young core — including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Levi Colwill. Moves for Welbeck, 35, and Henderson, 36, reflect that intent directly. Chelsea also attempted to sign Xhaka, 33, from Sunderland, though the Black Cats refused to sell the Switzerland captain.

The expected £52m signing of Lacroix, 26, from Crystal Palace would be Chelsea's most significant outlay on a player of that age in at least two years. The France defender brings immediate Premier League readiness — another quality Alonso appears to be prioritising.

Welbeck's potential arrival would give Chelsea an abundance of attacking options for a season without European football. It would, however, threaten the prospects of Liam Delap — considered one of the Premier League's most exciting young strikers when he joined from Ipswich Town last year — as well as Emmanuel Emegha. Nicolas Jackson, meanwhile, is open to leaving the club. Alonso is building the squad on his own terms: experience, personality, and the platform to improve on last season's disappointing 10th-place finish.
