The Football Association has formally charged Everton striker Martin Sherif with breaching its gambling regulations, the governing body confirmed in an official statement.

Sherif, 20, has been charged under FA Rule E1.2 in connection with 61 bets allegedly placed on football matches across a 15-month period, running from November 20, 2024 to February 12, 2026. He has until Monday, August 17 to submit a formal response to the charge.

What FA Rule E1.2 means

Rule E1.2 enforces a strict and comprehensive ban on gambling for all individuals involved in professional football in England. Players, managers, coaches, club staff, and officials are forbidden from betting — directly or indirectly — on any football match or competition.

The rule also prohibits passing inside information to third parties for gambling purposes, as well as instructing anyone else to place bets on their behalf.

Sherif's background

Born in Liberia, Sherif is a Netherlands youth international who joined Everton's youth academy at the age of 13 in 2019, having previously come through Dutch club Almere City. He progressed through the ranks at Finch Farm before putting pen to paper on his first professional contract with the Merseyside club.

During the 2025/26 season, Sherif spent time on loan in League One, representing both Rotherham United and Port Vale. Across those two separate spells, he made 29 senior appearances and scored four goals.

Should the allegations be upheld, Sherif could face sanctions ranging from financial fines to a lengthy ban from all footballing activity. Neither Everton nor Sherif have made any public statement regarding the charge.
