Graham Potter, the former Chelsea and West Ham United manager who now coaches Sweden, has described an unnamed former club as a "dysfunctional place" in a public Instagram exchange — prompting widespread speculation about which employer he had in mind.

The incident began when Potter, 51, posted a photograph of himself doing pilates on Thursday. A fan responded with the jibe: "Hopefully you are better at Pilates then you were a football manager." Potter shot back: "I'll try not to do Pilates in a dysfunctional place and I will be ok," adding a flexed bicep emoji.

A turbulent managerial journey

Potter first rose to prominence at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent three years and guided the Seagulls to their highest-ever top-flight finish in 2022. His success there earned him a move to Chelsea, but the spell proved disastrous — he won just 20 of his 31 matches in charge and was dismissed inside eight months.

After nearly two years out of management, Potter returned to the Premier League with West Ham United in January 2025. His second stint in London ended even more abruptly: he was sacked in September 2025 after West Ham collected just one victory from their opening five league matches of the new season. The Hammers finished the 2024/25 campaign in 14th place under Potter, but were subsequently relegated — after his departure — in the same season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea, who finished 10th last term — just 13 points above the relegation zone — have cycled through eight managers in three years since Potter's exit, with Xabi Alonso currently at the helm.

The pilates post prompted further exchanges beneath the image. When another user commented, "Didn't mind the money though, did you?" Potter replied simply: "absolutely not." A West Ham United supporter who wrote, "You got us relegated, you mug," received two laughing emojis in response.

Potter did not publicly clarify which club he was targeting with his "dysfunctional" remark. On the international stage, he led Sweden out of the group phase at this summer's tournament in North America before they fell to a 3-0 defeat against France — finalists in the previous edition of the competition.
