John Stones Emerges as Chelsea Transfer Target After Man City Departure

2 hours ago·2 min

Free agent centre-back John Stones has emerged as a potential transfer target for Chelsea this summer, following his departure from Manchester City upon the expiry of his contract earlier this month.

The 32-year-old, who featured for England at the FIFA World Cup 2026, is now seeking a new club after ending his long association with Manchester City. Chelsea are eyeing the experienced defender as they look to bolster their squad ahead of Xabi Alonso's first season as manager.

Chelsea's defensive priorities

The Blues have identified a centre-back as a key signing this window, with the club keen to bring in a physically imposing player who carries Premier League experience — qualities that Stones possesses in abundance.

Chelsea have generated approximately £130m through player sales so far this summer, with further departures anticipated. Among the defenders who could leave Stamford Bridge are Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Malo Gusto, and Axel Disasi.

Lacroix talks underway with Crystal Palace

Stones is not the only defensive option Chelsea are exploring. The club are in active discussions with Crystal Palace over a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix.

According to Sky Sports News, Palace are demanding a fee in excess of the £55m Tottenham paid Brighton & Hove Albion for Jan Paul van Hecke. The two clubs share a strong working relationship — they have previously completed deals involving Chalobah and Ben Chilwell — which could help smooth negotiations.

Chelsea's summer transfer business

Chelsea have already been active in the market this window. Incoming transfers include Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £43.5m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m, Denner from Corinthians for £8.7m, Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty for £2.1m, and Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee.

On the outgoing side, Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid for £51.8m, Andrey Santos has moved to Manchester United for £50m, Tyrique George has signed for Everton for £24m, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan has departed to West Brom for £4m.
